first i would like to say that normally everything i buy at Ikea is made out of particle board, which is some kind of mashed up spam like wood creation. I have a very nice record shelf from Ikea but all ive done is put records in it and its already cracking apart. particle board sucks. It was really nice to get a product from Ikea that is actually made of WOOD for once.
i was in the market for a small desk rack and they all cost above $100. really? for a stupid box with some rack rails. i remembered that a long ago that i saw an ikea hack to make a small desk rack out of a night stand. So i ordered the Ikea Rast and two 6U rack rails. the rast cost $15 at ikea and the rack rails cost 10 bucks for the pair, shipped off of ebay. the rast is pretty sturdy since it is real wood. i assembled it in a couple minutes and it took me about that long to drill the rails on. i used some 1/2" screws i found in the basement. so about ten minutes of assembly and $25.00 in materials and you have yourself a nice rack.
thought i should share my experience with my fellow producers and gear heads! im gonna post up some pics of the rack full of gear once its all set up.
Ikea Rast - 15.00
6U Rack Rails - 10.00 Shipped from Ebay
here is the rack now that it is full. i would like to add to this post that if you plan on building the rack you can get an extra rack space out of it by modding the shelf. if you lower the bottom shelf by drilling three new holes in each side for the bottom board to screw into you can easily make this rack have more space. i plan on doing that for the next rast i buy.
